Diagnostic Genetics Evaluations
|
Genetic factors play a major role in causing
developmental disabilities. While Down syndrome is
widely recognized, there are hundreds of lesser-known
genetic conditions that can cause intellectual,
behavioral, and psychiatric symptoms. Determining the
cause of a person’s disability can help individuals and
family members to better understand why it occurred and
the chances for a recurrence in future
generations. A diagnosis may also enable families and
providers to access syndrome-specific interventions
relevant to an individual’s unique needs.
Children and adults
enrolled in Elwyn's residential and day programs may be
referred for diagnostic genetics evaluations through our
office in the Medical Suite on Elwyn's Media Campus.
Genetic counselors work with primary care physicians and
consultants from area medical centers to evaluate and
address concerns about the cause of a person's
disability. Genetic counseling and referral for support
services are also provided. For more information, call
